Students from Akureyri are about to stage the play Galdra-Loftur at Hólar in Hjaltadalur, and the journalist Einar goes along for a story. He has left his old hunting grounds, police news in the capital, and moved north to Akureyri, where his paper wants to grow in a boom time for the north and east. On his way back from Hólar a new story comes up: a woman from Akureyri has fallen overboard during a rafting trip, one of the popular surprise outings of staff associations. Soon afterwards she is dead, and it is not the last death. Iceland's historical heritage is twisted into a puzzle of riddles.
