Kostas Kezdoglou, the narrator, is putting together the life of his friend Jannis Georgiadis in roughly a hundred brief scenes jotted on index cards, meant as an addition to an encyclopedia of the Greek diaspora. Jannis came north in 1967 as a guest worker and made a modest life in Bromölla in Skåne, building houses, marrying, raising children. Looking back into his family's history, the cards travel to the burning of Smyrna in 1922, to wartime Macedonia in 1943 and to the villages of rural Greece, following a century of emigration. Gradually the portrait becomes a tale of affection, loyalty and treachery, about a man convinced that he is made up of the people around him.
