Twenty stories, all set in North Lombok, a poor and neglected regency where the author grew up among the Sasak. Maq Cakol and his wife can no longer buy anything with their coffee harvest, because custom obliges them to give beans to every relative who calls, until they are left gathering what has fallen to the ground. In the title story, Bugiali lives in a damp valley among sugar palms and bamboo, in a house whose walls of woven palm leaves are rotting away. In the village of Lelenggo people take flies, ants and lice for spirits come to kill them, and with no transport, neighbours have to carry a sick woman home themselves.
