Aceh in the turbulent years after the fall of Suharto. At the centre is Ahmadi, a coarse man with a thick moustache, once a petty thug, now leader of a band of guerrillas sheltering in the village of Lampuki. Full of swagger, he urges the villagers to take up arms against the soldiers who have come from across the sea. He always escapes the men in uniform, but the powerless villagers are the ones who pay, again and again the targets of the army's anger. Meanwhile his wife Halimah, who collects the 'struggle tax' from house to house, falls into a forbidden love with Jibral the Handsome, a timid youth adored by every girl in the village. The war between the army and the rebels is told with sharp humour.
