In a little country parish, Turtola the sexton cuts wood, tidies the graveyard, prays and brings five-year-old Monika to kindergarten. His vicar, Siren, drinks, struggles with a thesis and bears the silence of heaven, and the two men talk of Bergman and Bonhoeffer. Gravestones are toppled, a crime brings a sentence, and the book probes guilt, mercy, fear and mortality through faith, art and ethics.
