Milan, 1919. Benito Mussolini, a former socialist leader expelled from his party, is a tireless agitator and editor of a small opposition newspaper, described in a police report as intelligent, sensual, reckless and fiercely ambitious. He senses an exhausted Italy, tired of its political class and of a dying democracy, and puts himself at the head of the irregulars, the criminals, the arsonists and the 'pure'. A novel in which nothing is invented follows the first act of the drama, from 1919 to 1925, with D'Annunzio, Margherita Sarfatti, Matteotti and a crowd of squadristi, Arditi, socialists and anarchists.
