Piero, a modest man, has always lived in the shadow of a friend from a good family who ran off to Rome after the war to make films. The friend, now a director of some success, is tormented by his homosexuality and seeks a kind of atonement in marrying Magda, fascinating and disappointed by life. Clinging to the friendship as to a part of himself, Piero falls in love with Magda.
