In letters to his sister Jana, the narrator returns to their childhood in Zlín just after the war: the town greeting its liberators with bread and salt, a supposed Gestapo man executed at a fête on the football ground, and many respectable families hoping that Masaryk's republic and the prosperity of the Baťa shoe empire would come back. Instead the Iron Curtain falls, Zlín becomes Gottwaldov, and the new regime dispossesses and imprisons "reactionaries", among them the narrator's own family and friends. For a while the children's world floats free of their parents' fears, until history and its half-truths catch up with them too.
