Ilan, an Israeli living in Bulgaria, has left the mother of his son Yoav for good. When the woman he now lives with loses their unborn child, he starts a letter to the boy, at the mother's suggestion, to give his own account of the break-up. Meant to be read when Yoav is grown, the letter turns into an unsparing confession that keeps nothing back, not even his sexual life: his ancestors, his several families, his bond with his brother, and the woman who wrecked his marriage. Circling back and forth in time across continents and generations, from the twentieth century to today, the story freely rewrites three biblical tales, Abraham and Isaac, the twins Esau and Jacob, and the sisters Leah and Rachel, and asks whether a man who thought himself incapable of it can feel loss and pain.
