Kultarinta

Erik Stenfors, heir to a wealthy Helsinki timber family and a naturalist by training, meets Lidia in spring 1917, a girl from a poor wilderness croft now working in town. Their acquaintance goes nowhere. As young men around him enlist with the Reds or the Whites, Erik, siding with neither, takes a post as forest warden far in the northern wilds, where a winter alone changes him. Returning to Helsinki the next spring he finds Finland independent and Lidia wanted by the law. Years later he tells his daughter Malla that even when all is lost, bedrock stays beneath you, and freedom needs nothing but boots.
