Little Vítek Kříž and his brother Jáchym grow up in the 1980s in Běstviny, a place made for an ancient legend: at the end of the castle garden a huge compost heap moves, and deep underground lives a worm that must be fed with joy, fear, pangs of conscience and, once in a while, something alive. When their grandfather is gone, one of the grandsons will have to take his place and look after Běstviny, and to keep the legend going he will have to kill. The brothers leave, but as adults they must come back to face the place's demons. And what if the characters rebel against their own narrator, an all-knowing presence that blows through the trees as wind, and tell the last chapters their own way?
