Heiman

Orphaned of his father at ten, Elof grows up with his younger brother Ivar on the goodwill of relatives, and dread never leaves him. Storytelling, drink and women quiet it for a while. He sees himself as a coward but cannot let anyone notice, not his comrades in the war and not Olga, his wife, which keeps her at a distance all their marriage. Above all stands pride, and the farm in a rocky Ostrobothnian village that is all the family has ever possessed. Following four generations, the novel weighs the price of living out other people's hopes instead of one's own.
