Emil Strezov came to an outlying Sofia neighbourhood from a small town nearby and grew from a scrawny schoolboy into an unrecognised poet. After the coup of 9 September 1944 the autumn suddenly puts power in his hands: he becomes a prosecutor at the People's Court, deciding people's fates. His story is told by a chorus of neighbours watching from windows, street corners and cafés: ordinary, passive people, cynical about promises of a bright future, who sense the falseness of the new regime from the start. Around Emil move his comrades Kosta and Lilyana, a revolutionary who wins recruits with her looks. As he learns what the old army and police did, his rage fixes on one man, a notorious playboy of the royal era, and he must choose between complicity and conscience, justice and personal revenge.
