Ten years ago, on this day, the narrator saw his parents for the last time. Since then he has changed phone number, house and continent and put an ocean between them, and calls them the best ten years of his life. Now he tells the story of his family: a father who held his wife and children under a regime of possession and subtle, pervasive violence, and a mother who gave up everything to be something in her husband's eyes. Their isolation is broken only by an unwelcome telephone, a few school friends and a friend of the mother who is soon banished, as the son's desire to break free grows.
