A man referred to only as 'I' is told through the houses he has lived in, one after another, from childhood to adult life. Each house holds the memory of who he was there: a newborn, a son, a lover, an intruder, a husband and father. The rooms remember his relationship with his parents, his friendships, his family and his solitude, and through them the story of the country over fifty years also passes. The novel asks how many parts of ourselves we are willing to give up to go on being ourselves, and where we have left what we did not take with us.
