Anything goes in these stories, from wanting the wrong person to punishing whoever says no. A fading model and a teenage fan of a celebrated novelist, who has written out the writer's bestseller by hand, end up side by side on a bus, the first carrying pepper spray; both are going to get even with someone, and the ride scrambles their plans. A woman whose granddaughter is half Nigerian is roused by junk mail, which revives a long-dormant desire and a suspicion of someone in the family, until she does something both ruinous and redeeming. And in the Negev, a dutiful soldier is told to cover a bunker wall with an enormous image of 'soldier number one' in time for an inspection by the army chief.
