Winter 1959. Shmuel Ash's girlfriend has left him, his parents have gone bankrupt and he has had to abandon his studies. He finds shelter and a wage in an old stone house on the outskirts of Jerusalem, where his task is to keep a witty, disabled old man company. There he meets Atalia Abravanel, a woman much older than he is, who warns him not to become infatuated with her. As his desire for her grows, so does his old fascination with how Jews have seen Jesus, and with Judas Iscariot, the archetypal traitor, while the house slowly gives up its secrets and the three of them turn over the founding of the state and its wars.
