Jayojit Chatterjee, an economist at a Midwestern college, is a year out of a bitter divorce, and his former wife Amala, in California, won custody of their son Bonny. For a few summer months he takes the boy to his parents' flat in Calcutta: his father, once a rear admiral and now unsure of his place without the command that came with rank, and his mother, who runs the home around three men. Bonny understands Bengali without speaking it and mostly looks on. Jayojit plans to start another book, on development policy and its morals, yet the weeks go on bank visits, chores and little trips out with the boy, while he wonders whether he is reaching back for the life he left or toward a new one.
