Kishore Babu belongs to Calcutta's prosperous Marwari community. A bypass operation changes how he sees things: to his family's alarm he takes to wandering the city, and the streets bring back what he had long avoided. He recalls his college years, caught between two friends, one a follower of Subhas Babu and the other a Gandhian, and his brother Lalit, lost young. Further back stands his great-grandfather Ramvilas, who left Rajputana in a famine to seek his fortune in Calcutta. Moving across several generations, through famine, floods and Partition, the book asks what trade, migration and the independence movement meant to the Marwaris, and why they carried Marwar with them in memory.
