Ash has fallen over Santiago. Ingrid Aguirre, who fled the dictatorship into exile, died abroad, and her coffin is now held up at a tiny Andean airfield across the border after her plane was rerouted. Her daughter Paloma and two friends from childhood, Iquela and Felipe, all raised by parents who fought the regime, take a hearse into the mountains so that Ingrid can be laid to rest in Chile. Each bears the past in a separate way: Felipe tallies the dead in search of a perfect figure, Iquela keeps her old fears tightly reined in, and Paloma carries an exile she inherited rather than lived.
