Five first-person narrators take turns telling one weekend on Dwaalpoort, a hunting farm said to be a paradise. Jurgens, a judge, has come to find and take home his trophy, which need not be an antelope; his wife Anne, once a stripper, adds sexual tension. Henning works the land but does not own it, and he distrusts Bullet, confidant of the late owner Mafika and childhood friend of Mafika’s daughter Rentia. In short chapters that look ahead and back into the farm’s past, ever more secrets surface, and every motive turns murky. Tracks run everywhere, among them those of Mhlope, a mythical white hartebeest. Ancestors still walk the yard, and Rentia at times shares her telling with Henriëtte, a forebear cast out during the Boer War.
