Aida is six when she and her mother flee their small Bosnian village by night, reaching the Italian border where her father waits. Together they settle in Milan, where Aida has to grow up suddenly and on her own, because exile has overturned her parents' lives too. Even the birth of her brother Ibro cannot put things back in order: the family's real life is always elsewhere, in a place the war has erased. Under the weight of nostalgia the family wears itself out, one consumed by anger, one crushed by secrets, one taken hostage by an elusive illness, and Aida realizes she must draw a new horizon for herself.
