Šeptuchy

Dorota, the gravedigger's daughter, takes in everything around her in Podlasie, a forgotten, wooded region between Poland and Belarus: tangled relationships, religiosity, neglect and beauty, the supernatural and harsh reality, and the šeptuchy, women who can heal. Her best friend narrates their adolescence in this strange, magical land on the border of two states. The book grew out of the author's visits to the region and includes photographs taken there.
