Ota Pavel. Pod powierzchnią

Ota Pavel once said he wanted two things: a typewriter, and then a good fishing rod. This biography follows how he got the first. The son of a Czech Jew, he was scarred by the Holocaust, became a convinced communist after the war and worked obsessively as Czechoslovakia's busiest sports journalist before mental illness overtook him. His life serves as a case of how the century's upheavals decided the fate of people in Central Europe who had no say in them, and places him among its Jewish writers, from Kafka to Kisch.
