Madoka, a high-school girl in her second year, keeps her weight below forty kilos, in part so that her periods will stop. She has been seeing Umi, another girl, for three months. Around her, everyone is careful to say only things that cannot hurt, and that careful kindness grates on her. Umi speaks the language of freedom and rights, but in doing so turns Madoka into a type rather than a person, while Madoka herself reads every room, puts herself and others in boxes and never quite collides with anyone. She is still looking for someone who could be truly irreplaceable to her.
