Famine grips the country, winter will not end, and hunger has turned neighbours into beasts. Small Mataleena trudges through blizzards placing each step in her mother's footprints, and pictures her hunger as a kitten drowned in a sack, scratching at her from inside; her mind's eye is fixed on rich, glittering St Petersburg. Far from such misery, the well-off Renqvist brothers have troubles of their own. Teo, a doctor, cannot see how God permits such a disaster, and Lars, a junior official in the Senate, smothers his doubts by obeying his superior blindly. Eventually the brothers' lives cross those of the starving wanderers.
