A boy of nine, the son of secular Jewish parents who have split up, is the centre of this novel set in Central Europe as the war approaches. From his father, a gifted painter, he absorbs tenderness and an artist's swings of mood; from his mother he learns the sensual warmth of a mother's love and also the taste of betrayal, when she falls for a young Ukrainian, takes his religion and marries him. Estranged from her, the boy wanders from place to place with his father. Around them the Jewish characters open themselves to love, to another faith and to avant-garde culture, an openness that is also a painful dependence, while the menace of the coming years gathers.
