A virus that infects animals and kills people has emptied the world of livestock and pets, and in their place the consumption of human meat has been legalised across much of the globe. Society now divides into those who eat and those who are eaten; the bodies of the dead are cremated so that no one can consume them. Marcos Tejo, the manager of a meat-processing plant, looks with sensitive eyes at the atrocity this has unleashed, and through him the novel surveys a grey, sceptical, inhospitable world and asks what remains of humanity, and of any bond with another person, when we are literally what we eat.
