Maria Jarema came from Stary Sambor in the eastern borderlands to Kraków to reinvent art. She studied with Xawery Dunikowski, helped found the Kraków Group and the Cricot theatre, and was Tadeusz Kantor's favourite collaborator. Painter, sculptor, printmaker and designer of costumes, puppets and monuments, she was also an activist who chose her men and turned them into lifelong friends. She was married to the writer Kornel Filipowicz and was the twin sister of Nuna. The biography follows her through the art world of the interwar and postwar years and into the time when, ill, she worked to finish one more painting.
