Her grandmother's one great dream is a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, so a young woman decides to bring Jerusalem to her, transforming their little village in the Alentejo. Around them gather odd figures: a schoolmaster who exists alongside himself, an English lady who spends her nights in the belly of a whale, and a girl hooked on cowboy novels who is sure the Virgin Mary has taken her mother's place.
