As students, the Dutchman Mulder and the white South African Donald were caught up in the campaign against apartheid. Four decades on, Mulder is a man of refined tastes settled in Paris when Donald turns up and urges him to come and judge the new South Africa in person. He ends up in a shabby cottage in a fishing settlement on the coast of the Cape. Freedom has not brought what was hoped: white and coloured residents alike feel cheated, and the cities are gripped by violence that fills the gutter press. Unable to keep out of it, the old friends set out to rescue one gifted young addict.
