In the summer of 1949, a year on from the Nakba, an Israeli commander and his soldiers set up camp in a stretch of the Negev desert they suspect Arab infiltrators cross. Their days pass in routine until they come upon Bedouin near a spring and take a young Bedouin girl captive. Decades later a young woman who works in an office in Ramallah reads a newspaper article about the crime committed at the camp and notices that it happened on the date of her own birthday. Using a friend's identity card, she sets out through the checkpoints towards the Negev, trying to piece the story together from its minor details.
