Yohanan Rivlin, a scholar of the Arab world married to a Haifa judge, cannot let go of a family mystery: five years ago his son divorced after only a year, with no real explanation, and has seemed stuck in that old love ever since. When the son's former father-in-law, who ran a guest house in Jerusalem, dies, Rivlin begins an intrusive investigation into what went wrong, hoping the full story will free his son. At the same time his own research on Algeria, on the hopeful years of its war of independence and the blind terror of the 1990s, has stalled. Pushed by his old mentor Tedeschi, he turns to rare Algerian stories and poems, which bring him to Samaher, an Arab student from the Galilee, her family, and her cousin Rashed.
